Aft Starboard Cabin
Overview
Similar story across all the interior - the original insulation and lining was all shot. Either water damaged or just old and crap. This was completely stripped - a job I still have PTSD over, really horrible work.
This cabin had a few extra demons though, with the engine water intake being “hacked” through the bed area (why?!?) and this being the house for the old engine battery and various electrics. Also the damage on the solar arch and solar cable grommets cause more of an issue with water leakage, so this benefited from various other repairs more than other areas of the boat!
Electric Removal
Almost all the electrics were removed from here, and as the lead-acid battery was no longer in here, it also no longer needed the vent that had been added, so this was removed and filled. The hydraulic auto-pilot pump still sits here, so that was boxed off.
Voids Filled
Basically filling holes, gaps, wood-work repairs, etc. Getting it back to a relatively nice place.
Painting Mistake
My first approach was to just paint the interior, so the bare fibreglass was primed and painted. The condensation was quick to appear and I realised my mistake, so this was sanded back to key it for proper insulation and finishing installation
10mm closed cell foam & carpet lining
Lots of 10mm closed cell foam was used to insulate the interior. Although it’s self-adhesive, I also used spray glue to try avoid gaps. This was then covered in carpet lining (attached with spray glue).
LED Lighting & USB ports
LED lighting was fitted, both overhead and lower power spots. Also USB sockets fitted. There’s separate circuits for different parts of the boat, but it’s not quite 1 circuit per cabin.
Shelving, Access Panels, Windows
As the intention was to have a live-aboard with my kids, the shelving needed to be robust! So simple shelves were build and fibreglassed in to make them strong. An access panel was built to access the rudder top mounts at the rear. Windows were resealed. Everything primed and painted, and new foam flooring installed.
Mattress
Ikea single mattress was cut to the shape of the sleep area. The old 3 part cushions were disposed off, and a single piece mattress used instead. Much more comfy and meet the goal of being live-aboard ready.
